Japan With Kids — The Honest Answers

The stuff guidebooks skip, from a parent who lives here

We live in Tokyo and raise our kids here. These are the questions visiting families actually ask us — answered straight, with the inconvenient parts left in. Fifteen answers, a table of what journeys really take door-to-door with children, and the one-day rule for how much fits in a day at each age.

Eight pages. Print it on A4 (Europe, Australia) or US Letter (North America), or keep it on your phone. No email needed.

What’s inside

  1. Can we really use a stroller everywhere?

  2. Trains, rush hours & the shinkansen

  3. Where do we buy diapers & formula?

  4. Bottles & hot water on the go

  5. Do hotels have cribs & kid stuff?

  6. Laundry & what you can’t rent

  7. What will my picky eater eat?

  8. How bad are the crowds, really?

  9. Where do we even sit down?

  10. How long does getting around take?

Plus two pages most families tell us they wish they’d had first: a table of what common Tokyo journeys and day trips actually take with children versus what the transit app says, and the one-day rule below.

The one-day rule

From the last page of the guide. How much actually fits in a day with kids.

AgesA realistic day
0–2 (napper)One area, one main thing. The nap decides the schedule — not you.
3–5One area + one nearby extra. Meltdown risk spikes after 15:00.
6–9Two areas max, with a real sit-down break between them.

One rule before you read the rest: whatever your itinerary says, add time. Japan runs on time — but families don’t.

One honest note

Everything in the guide was checked on the ground as of the date above — but shop stock, hotel policies and station layouts change. Where an answer matters for your booking (a crib, a laundry machine, a reserved shinkansen seat), confirm it with the hotel or JR before you rely on it. The guide tells you what to ask; it can’t promise the answer.
