Nakano is the calmer, more manageable version of Akihabara: the anime and retro-toy shops of Nakano Broadway sit at the end of a flat, covered shopping arcade five minutes from the station, so it works in any weather. Broadway itself is an old building with narrow aisles, so it is easier with a carrier than a stroller.
Nakano is one stop from Shinjuku but feels like a neighbourhood rather than a hub: a covered arcade of cheap restaurants leading to Nakano Broadway, a wonderfully strange four-floor warren of anime, manga and vintage-toy shops. For families it beats Akihabara on two counts — it is compact and the arcade is covered, so rain never ends the day. Bamiyan. A family-restaurant take on Chinese food — booth seats, kids’ plates and a changing table, so it works like a family restaurant.
Kura Sushi. Like Sushiro, with a “Bikkura Pon” capsule toy every five plates — pure kid catnip.
Ootoya. Home-style Japanese set meals — an easy way to try real washoku with kids.
Saizeriya. The cheapest sit-down meal in Japan. Kids’ plates, high chairs, and you can bring baby food — the default lifesaver.
Yayoiken. Set meals with free rice refills. Kids’ plates and high chairs, but step-free access and changing tables vary a lot by branch.
McDonald’s. Predictable, fast, high chairs and a changing table in most branches.
Facilities vary by branch and change over time — treat this as “what to expect”, and any staff will help if you ask “high chair?” or “changing table?”.
Nursing rooms & changing near Nakano Station
- Nakano Broadway has restrooms with changing facilities, though it is an older building — the newer station-side buildings are more comfortable.
- The shopping buildings on the north side of Nakano Station have baby rooms; ask at an information desk for the nearest one.
- Nakano Central Park, just south-west of the station, has clean public restrooms with changing tables and open lawn space.
Strollers, elevators & getting around
- Nakano Sun Mall — the covered arcade from the station to Broadway — is flat, roofed and pram-friendly, which makes this a strong rainy-day plan.
- Nakano Broadway is a 1960s building with narrow shop aisles and small lifts; a baby carrier is far easier than a stroller inside.
- Nakano Central Park is a modern, step-free plaza with lawns — the place to let kids out before or after the shops.
