Shinagawa is the most practical family base in Tokyo: it is a Shinkansen stop, a 15-minute train from Haneda Airport, and the station buildings (Atre, Wing) have baby rooms and dozens of easy restaurants without ever going outside. There is also an aquarium a few minutes’ walk away, which makes it a real destination and not just a transfer.
Most families pass through Shinagawa without realising it is one of the best places to actually stay: bullet trains south, a short hop to Haneda, a big cluster of family hotels, and a station stuffed with baby rooms and restaurants. Add Maxell Aqua Park — an aquarium right by the station — and a jet-lagged first or last day plans itself. Here are the kid-friendly chains, the baby rooms, and how to move with a stroller.

Gusto. Full family restaurant: kids’ menu, drink bar, a changing table, and a tablet to order in English.
Jonathan’s. Same group as Gusto, a step calmer. Booth seats and a changing table.
Sushiro. Conveyor sushi is a hit with kids — touch-screen ordering, plates from ~¥120, often a toy-capsule reward.
Kura Sushi. Like Sushiro, with a “Bikkura Pon” capsule toy every five plates — pure kid catnip.
Ootoya. Home-style Japanese set meals — an easy way to try real washoku with kids.
Saizeriya. The cheapest sit-down meal in Japan. Kids’ plates, high chairs, and you can bring baby food — the default lifesaver.
Facilities vary by branch and change over time — treat this as “what to expect”, and any staff will help if you ask “high chair?” or “changing table?”.
Nursing rooms & changing near Shinagawa Station
- Atre Shinagawa, the shopping building attached to the station, has a baby room (nursing + changing) — the easiest stop right where you arrive.
- Wing Takanawa and the hotel lobbies on the west side also have baby facilities; any information desk understands “baby room?”.
- Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa has changing facilities inside, so you do not have to leave mid-visit.
Strollers, elevators & getting around
- Shinagawa is a modern station and largely step-free — the central concourse is wide and flat, and elevators are well signed on both the Takanawa (west) and Konan (east) sides.
- The Konan (east) side is newer and quieter, with wide pavements and office plazas — the easier direction with a pram.
- The Shinkansen platforms have elevator access, which makes Shinagawa a much calmer place to board a bullet train with kids than Tokyo Station.
