Tokyo Skytree is a 634-metre tower, but for families the real destination is Tokyo Solamachi, the huge modern shopping complex wrapped around its base. It is fully step-free, air-conditioned and stuffed with kid-friendly restaurants, an aquarium and a planetarium — an ideal all-weather day. If it rains at Tokyo Skytree / Oshiage Station

One of the strongest wet-weather plans in Tokyo. Tokyo Solamachi is entirely indoors and connects directly to both Oshiage and Tokyo Skytree stations, so you can arrive, spend the day between the aquarium, the planetarium, the food floors and the shops, and leave without going outside. The tower itself is worth skipping in rain — the view is the point.

When to go, and how long to allow

Go for Solamachi rather than the tower with small children; the observation decks involve queues, timed tickets and a lot of standing. Budget a full day in bad weather or half a day in good. The riverside walk to Asakusa takes about twenty flat minutes if you want to pair the two.
