Shinjuku is easy for families once you ignore the scary station map and anchor on the department stores: Takashimaya Times Square and the Lumine/NEWoMan buildings have excellent baby rooms and a huge range of kid-friendly restaurants above the station. With a stroller, come and go through the New South exit, which is step-free.
Shinjuku Station is the world’s busiest, which sounds terrifying with kids but mostly means everything you need is stacked right there. The trick is to treat the big station buildings as your base — they hold the baby rooms, the restaurants, and the elevators — and to save Shinjuku Gyoen for when the kids need green space. Gusto. Full family restaurant: kids’ menu, drink bar, a changing table, and a tablet to order in English.
Jonathan’s. Same group as Gusto, a step calmer. Booth seats and a changing table.
Royal Host. The nicer family restaurant — a bit pricier, roomy booths, reliable changing table.
Sushiro. Conveyor sushi is a hit with kids — touch-screen ordering, plates from ~¥120, often a toy-capsule reward.
Kura Sushi. Like Sushiro, with a “Bikkura Pon” capsule toy every five plates — pure kid catnip.
Ootoya. Home-style Japanese set meals — an easy way to try real washoku with kids.
Facilities vary by branch and change over time — treat this as “what to expect”, and any staff will help if you ask “high chair?” or “changing table?”.
Nursing rooms & changing near Shinjuku Station
- Takashimaya Times Square (by the New South exit) has some of the best baby facilities in Shinjuku — spacious nursing rooms, hot water, and plenty of kid-friendly dining on its restaurant floors.
- Lumine 1 & 2 and NEWoMan, built into the station itself, each have baby rooms marked on their floor maps by the elevators.
- Odakyu and Keio department stores above the west side also have nursing rooms; any info desk will point you to the nearest one.
Strollers, elevators & getting around
- Use the New South exit (Shinjuku Southern Terrace side): it is modern, step-free, and drops you between Takashimaya and NEWoMan — the least stressful way in and out with a stroller.
- Avoid crossing the station underground at rush hour with a pram; go up to street level and use the wide Southern Terrace deck instead.
- Shinjuku Gyoen (a national garden, small entry fee) is a 10-minute walk and has flat, stroller-friendly paths and big lawns — the best place near the station to let kids run. Note it is a no-alcohol, no-play-equipment garden, so it is calm rather than a playground.
