If it rains at Ikebukuro Station

This is the rainy-day destination. Sunshine City is a vast covered complex — aquarium, indoor theme park, shops and food — reached from the station by a mostly sheltered walk, and it holds several baby rooms. Seibu and Tobu sit directly over the station if you would rather not walk at all. A wet day here is genuinely no worse than a dry one.

When to go, and how long to allow

Aim to be at Sunshine Aquarium at opening or after 3pm; the middle of the day is its busiest. Budget a full day if you are doing the aquarium and the complex, half a day otherwise. Stick to the East exit side with children — the West side is denser nightlife and less pleasant with a pram.
