Preschoolers enter free, and even holidays run only moderately busy. The trade-off is the size: this is a walking day.
Where it fits in a Tokyo trip
It anchors a Yokohama day for families who want animals rather than the harbour. Reaching it takes a bus from the station, so treat it as the day’s main event. Compared with Ueno Zoo it is calmer and better designed; compared with Tama Zoo it is flatter but further.
Getting there: Bus from Nakayama Station (JR Yokohama line) or Tsurugamine Station — the zoo is not directly on a rail line.

Zoorasia or Ueno Zoo with kids?
Ueno if the zoo is a stop inside a Tokyo sightseeing day — it is central, and the dinosaur museum is next door. Zoorasia if the animals are the point: bigger, better designed, far less crowded, five confirmed nursing rooms, and free for preschoolers. The cost is a bus ride from the station and a lot of walking.
