The best family days near Tokyo are mostly outside it — and the thing that decides them is not distance but the booking system. Four of the twelve below cannot be visited on a whim, and one sells tickets only through Japanese convenience stores. What is the best day trip from Tokyo with a toddler?
For ages one to four, the Yokohama Anpanman Children’s Museum — on our own visits it is the strongest attraction in the region for that age, provided your child knows the character. For a classic big day out, Tokyo Disneyland: entry is free under four and two in-park baby centres are officially confirmed. For a Kamakura day, anchor it on Enoshima Aquarium rather than the temples.
Which day trips from Tokyo need booking in advance?
Four: both Disney parks (date-specific tickets), the Anpanman Museum (timed tickets that can sell out a month ahead on weekends), and the Doraemon museum, which is reservation-only with four entry times a day and tickets sold through Lawson convenience stores. The rest on this page take walk-ups.
Is Kamakura suitable for a family with a stroller?
Partly. The temples involve gravel paths and steps, which is hard work with a stroller, so pick one rather than five. What makes the day work with small children is Enoshima Aquarium on the beach — full baby facilities, free under three — and the Enoden railway between Kamakura and Enoshima, which small children treat as an attraction in itself.
